Lausanne Region: South Asia

Welcome!

South Asia is home to well over one-fifth of the world's population, making it the most highly and densely populated geographical region in the world. While the region is variously defined in different classifications, it essentially encompasses the sub-Himalayan countries of the Indian subcontinent, and includes some adjoining countries to the west and the east. For the Lausanne Movement South Asia includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka within.

The South Asian experience is like a taste of `South Asian鈥 curry - full of colour, spice and variety: the most culturally complex region of the world, with unbelievable ethnic, socio-economic and religious diversity. This region has the largest number of poor and undernourished in the world, the world鈥檚 largest youth and working age population and several fragile states of global geopolitical importance. The Church in South Asia has both ancient roots and modern vibrant expressions. There is desperate need of revival in some quarters, while other sections are vitally engaged in sharing the love of Christ in word, life and deed, often in the midst of challenging conditions.

Close one-fourth of the world鈥檚 unreached people groups live in South Asia, offering massive opportunities for prayerful and sensitive communication of the gospel of Christ. The Lausanne Movement invites your prayers and active participation as we seek to advance the cause of Christ鈥檚 transforming mission in South Asia.
